So Far, So Good

Wesley Chapel, Florida (high 92, low 72)

It was another hot day in Florida yesterday, although not as hot as most of the country.  We are finally getting back into our normal afternoon rain shower pattern.  After the rain was over, it cooled down nicely.

We loaded Baxter in his stroller and took him over to meet David and Sherry.  They were inside and we didn’t want to bother them, so Baxter will have to meet them another time.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions about our power outage the other day.

We checked with the campground to see if anyone else reported a problem.   No one had.   They sent the maintenance man over to check it out.  He didn’t really do anything, but did say he will personally  check the power pedestal 3-4 times on Friday to make sure we have power.  He is aware we have cats inside and that I am concerned about the heat should we have a power failure.   This part of the campground has all new power pedestals and the campground is far from full, so it’s hard to think there was an overload.   We did pull the surge protector out and checked the plug connections.   It looked brand new.  You should always flip the circuit breaker before you plug in or out, to prevent “arcing” that can damage the metal plug.   Al always does that and he also lubed it with some sort of special grease.  The plug looked like brand new….which is almost is.

Yesterday, I decided to see if I could repeat the problem.   Both a/c units were running. I turned on a few lights, the tv,  the dryer, and then my hair dryer.  Nothing happened, no power outage. We have never had any power issues before.  We always use what we want, when we want and have never had a problem before.  I never gave it a thought before now.   In the old motor home we had an Intellic power management system for our 30 amp power.  If we used too much, the system would automatically “shed” and cut power to one a/c unit.  We never blew a circuit and it worked perfectly.

We don’t have that type of system on this coach, and I figured it was because we had a 50 amp system.

I am feeling better about things, but will still worry tomorrow when we’re gone.  I hope the maintenance man makes good on his promise to check things out.

We’re looking forward to going scalloping tomorrow.  Here is the little treasure we will be looking for.

Scalloping in Hernando Beach Crystal River Homosassa Florida scallop trips

We heard from the friends we will be going with, that they got their limit yesterday in an hour!  The problem is, that:

  1.  I don’t eat them.

2.  I don’t clean them.  Smile

They are kind of like oysters as far as cleaning.  You scoop out a little white ball that is the meat.   Yucky stuff… and I’m not touching that.

I do, however catch them.  That’s the fun part.  You just snorkel around in shallow grassy water and they are just swimming around.   It should be fun!   Of course I’ll bring my camera!

  1. OH we missed Baxter. You must have come just before we went outside and sat on the patio. Next time just give a holler or a knock. We weren't doing anything.

Glad the power seems OK. I'm sure things will be fine on Friday. Can't wait to hear where you are going and see how to get scallops. I've never done that but I'd sure eat them.

    1. I am surprised you'd eat scallops. I didn't think Vegans ate any type of meat or fish. There might be a scallop in your future though.

  3. I have never been scalloping but love to eat them. Looking forward to seeing some photos of the hunt.
Interesting about the power outage. Hope he does follow through and can find the problem.

  4. Jim loves scallops but not me. Not even sure I'd like to catch them. We have 30 amp in our rig and the other day had the tv and air on and I put in some toast. Blew the breaker. But it only happened that one time. I've been making toast since with no problem. So I figure it was just a low power second and I hit it just right.

  5. As we enjoy Oregon, I think about a future trip to Florida. If we ever make it there We might have to try snorkling. I know we will never go diving, but snorking looks possible.

  6. I, too, will be interested in your scallop hunt. I've only had them once and was not impressed, but maybe they weren't cooked properly. ?

    1. I've never eaten them, but I'm sure there are many ways to cook them. As Paul said, some of the scallops you see at the store are not real scallops, so it's hard to tell what you ate.

  7. I am always interested in hearing about any type of RV problem that RVers have experienced as it increases my knowledge base. Thanks for sharing.

The only scallops I am interested in are the ones at a seafood restaurant grilled/fried on my plate.

  9. LOVE Baxter's kitty stroller... too cute!

Glad you are more comfortable with your power situation to leave the kitties on Friday.

We had more rigs move in this loop of our park today (we are all on 30 amp only) and they right away blew the main breaker in the service panel. Steve good-naturedly gabbed with all the new guys, standing out on the road, as they were wondering what happened. So Steve gave them all a quick lesson on being on 30 amps and what to do to get us all through the evening without any more power outages

(only run 1 of your air conditioners, turn fridge and water heater to propane, if you run the micro shut off your air conditioner while it's running,
and pay attention to your total load)

Seems to have worked, since the host reset the main breaker, we have now been on for over an hour with no more outages.

This park is slated to get new 800 amp service (right now they are only 200 amp) and new breakers and posts this fall. That will be greatly appreciated!

  10. I have a great campfire story about scallops and scallop fishing boats from my Coast Guard days. It has to do with the fact that all scallops sold are not all scallops.

    1. I was just talking to my friend yesterday about how a lot of "scallops" in the store are not actually scallops at all. I'd be interesting in hearing your scallop story.

  11. We love to snorkel, but I've never been lucky enough to get anything I could eat while doing so. Tried for lobsters once in the Keys and discovered they can swim very fast. The chase was fun though. Scallops are great on skewers wrapped in bacon on the grill.

    1. LOL....I can just picture you trying to catch a lobster. Yes...they do move fast. The secret it to "tickle" them forward out of their hole, put a net behind them then tap their head. When they scoot backwards your net catches them. Of course, it's an art, not a science.

  12. Hope you have a great time today and are not worrying too much about the cats. I am a worrier when I leave my dogs for very long in the RV. We are doing it tomorrow. I am always thankful when I arrive home and find that they are just fine.
