The Oldest Campground

St George, SC   (Jolly Acres Campground)

Chatty had his surgery today and according to the doctor, he did fine.  He will have to stay in the animal hospital for one or two nights.  When he gets home, he will have to wear an Elizabethan collar for at least a week, to prevent him from damaging the surgery area.  Poor baby.  They hate those things!

We did some local sightseeing today on the way back from some shopping in Summerville.

We had heard of a place called the Cypress Campground.  It was definitely not the type of campground we would expect.   NO full hook-ups or 50 amp service here!

It was started in 1794.

There were at least 50 of these old wooden buildings in a circle around a large open center area.

There was a row of outhouses on the perimeter.

There was a cooking area in each one.

The church appeared to still be in use.  A man pulled up when we were leaving and told us that they still use the campground and invited us for their next event in October. We’re assuming he was the minister.

The cemetery beside the church was very old.

The confederate flag was on many graves.  You can sure tell we’re in the south.

There are a few other things nearby that we’d like to see and we’ll head out again tomorrow.  There are three plantations nearby that look very interesting.  Unfortunately, the one we really want to see cost $25 per person.  I don’t think we’ll see it this trip though.  It’s not in the budget, since we plan to see the Biltmore Estate in Asheville,  and it’s over $50 per person.

  5. That is an interesting campground. We really enjoy visiting those historic locations. We did visit several plantations while we were in the area and they were also very interesting.

  7. Boy the Biltmore has really raised its prices whew! Glad to hear Chatty did well and will be home soon.

Interesting how some church meeting campgrounds become historic and others like Chautauqua New York become more of what they originally were as they modernize. Very interesting pictures

  8. According to the owners of the Biltmore they make a profit so they can continue the preservation, they don't Do preservation to make a profit.

  9. We did the Biltmore, but if it's the gardens you're interested in check out the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville, I thought it was much nicer and it was a steal at $8 per car!!
