Belted Kingfisher

(For Judy)

Al and I have had a running joke for years about taking a photograph of a Belted Kingfisher.

We see them everywhere.  They will be sitting still for the longest time, then when I get ready to snap the photo, they fly away.  They are the worst birds to photograph.  I’ve gotten so I don’t even try to take their picture.

I had to laugh yesterday when I read Judy's blog the other day.  It seems, I am not the only one that has a problem photographing the Kingfisher.  Judy is quite the photographer, so I felt good to know that I’m not the only one that has had such trouble with this bird.

I wanted to show Judy that it is indeed possible to get a photo of this bird.  You just have to be patient.

One of the first days we were here in North Carolina, we went up to Grandfather Mountain.

That’s where I finally got my Belted Kingfisher shot.

Al saw this bird and said to me, “here’s the only way you’ll ever get a picture of a Kingfisher.”

And so I did.

Eat your heart out Judy.

(of course I still didn’t get a good shot)

  1. Ha Ha Ha! Some how I think using a stuffed bird shouldn't count. :)

I think if we persist, one of these days one of us will get a decent shot of this species...

  3. I'm with Rick. So the challenge is on. Will Karen or Judy get their bird first?

  4. Very funny Karen! Keep at it. The challenge of trying to beat Judy at a game where she's the expert could keep you alert for years!! Count me out, I don't even compete in "The End". :-))
